Schalke has no interest in Huntelaar

by Thomas

Schalke 04 have insisted that there has been no contact for their start striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and they expect him to stay in the Bundesliga for the foreseeable future.

There has been doubt over the Dutchman’s future for a while now as his current contract with Schalke expires at the end of the season, and he does not seem close to signing a new-deal with the club.

Huntelaar can on his day, be one of the best front-men around and the news of him potentially going on the cheap in the January transfer window seems to have reached a number of Premier League clubs, most notably Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, Schalke’s general manager, Horst Heldt said: “There have been no offers or any sign of Klaas-Jan leaving.

“If someone comes to us six months before the expiry date, and has a lot of money, we will deal with it. But from Arsenal circles we hear there is no money anyway.”

It is a tricky situation for the German side to be in and they will want the Holland international to put pen-to-paper before January. If he does not, then they may be forced to sell him to avoid losing their leading scorer for nothing in the summer.

Huntelaar himself has hinted at a move to the Gunners in the past, and he was involved in the Schalke team that completely outplayed them at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League earlier in the season.

If we look at some of the betting for where the 28-year-old could be heading after the January window, you will see that it is Liverpool who are the favourites to land his signature with odds of 2/1.

The Reds are after a striker as at the moment, Brendan Rodgers only has Luis Suarez as a recognised forward to call upon.

Arsenal are then at 4/1 to sign Huntelaar and he could be the replacement for Robin van Persie, who of course left in the summer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are then both at 14/1.
