Wenger wants ‘long-term’ commitment from Wilshere

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has tested Jack Wilshere’s commitment to the club by urging him to sign a new long-term deal at the Emirates.

Too often Arsenal have seen their best players move on and as one of the most important members of their squad, Wenger wants Wilshere to be a part of the club’s progression over the next few years.

The England international – who recently returned from injury – has always spoken about how much the loves the Gunners, but the fans are still wary of the fact that another club might come in with a big money offer for the midfielder.

Referring to Wilshere’s future, Wenger said: “He has always been very committed to this club and I hope he will show that. There is only one way to show that and it is to commit your long-term future to the club.

“We have quite a lot of British players. Like Gibbs, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and, of course, we still have the case of Walcott.”

Wilshere is definitely key for Arsenal. If he – as someone who has always been at the Gunners – has contract issues, they will wonder what they are doing wrong. They need him to set an example and commit to the club.

The 20-year-old does still have two-and-a-half-years to run on his current deal, but Wenger won’t want a repeat of the Walcott situation. In this case, the current deal is up in the summer and Arsenal are risking losing him for free.

Now that Wenger has urged Wilshere to sign a new long-term deal, you would imagine both parties will be in discussion very soon. Before then though, the midfielder will want to keep stepping up his involvement in the first team and get back into the swing of things after so long out.

Arsenal are up against Everton on Wednesday night, so a positive and influential performance from Wilshere would be more than welcome.

Going into the game, they are 9/5 to grab the win, while Wilshere can be backed at 22/1 to score the first goal. Then, in more long-term betting markets, the Gunners midfielder is 50/1 to be the team’s leading scorer by the end of the season.

Pretty good speculative bets to place I reckon
