2012 World Twenty20 Semi-Finals Odds & Predictions

by Scott

The World Twenty20 is down to the final four teams and we are set for two cracking semi-finals. There have been some fine team and individual performances so far – even from the teams that have been knocked out – and there is plenty of time for more.

Who is going to step up in these latter stages though? Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia and West Indies are all two wins away from becoming World Champions and in Twenty20 cricket, you cannot afford an off day. In fact, you cannot afford an off hour.

The pressure is well and truly on and the passionate crowds in Sri Lanka are ready for the climax of this thrilling tournament.

Thursday 4th October, Semi Final One – Sri Lanka v Pakistan – Pick: Sri Lanka @ 1.73

As the host nation, Sri Lanka always had a fantastic chance of going far in this tournament and they have certainly proved a class apart at times over the last week or so.

They appear to be stepping things up a gear too. It seems like quite some time since their defeat to South Africa and there is no doubt that the wins over West Indies and England have given them fantastic momentum.

The key men for Sri Lanka? Dilshan and Jayawardene have enhanced their match winner status, while with the ball, Lasith Malinga really is unplayable at times. In a tense situation at the death, he is the man to turn to.

Make no mistake about it though, Pakistan are a force to be reckoned with. They were many people’s dark horse at the start of the tournament and their performances so far have been impressive.

They have suffered only one defeat – at the hands of India – but can be massively encouraged by the victory over fellow semi-finalists Australia last time out. Nasir Jamshed was the star with the bat, while Saeed Ajmal has taken eight wickets in this tournament already.

The best spinner in the world has proved the difference for Pakistan before and he will look to do so again. During his four overs, they know things can be tight and that he can take wickets. This is massive for them and Sri Lanka will need to score off Pakistan’s other bowlers if they are to have any chance.

It is Sri Lanka that will edge this one though, but it should be a cracking contest.

Extra Bet – Umar Akmal to be the Top Pakistan Batsman@ 6.50

Friday 5th October, Semi Final Two – Australia v West Indies – Pick: West Indies @2.20

Australia have surprised many with their performances in this tournament. They have a talented team of course, but too much had to go right for them to progress to the latter stages.

Well, in a nutshell, a lot has gone right for them and their superb leader Michael Clarke. With the bat Shane Watson, Michael Hussey and David Warner – the experienced trio – have all fired, while the bowling unit – led by Watson with 11 wickets – has been on top form.

There is a significant unity to this Australia team at the moment too. Clarke has them well organised and fighting for each other. You can never rule out the boys from down under and so it has proved in Sri Lanka for this tournament.

They have the added bonus of having beaten the West Indies already too, so have a slight advantage in terms of confidence going into this one.

West Indies are a top Twenty20 side though. They have the individual talent to be a major contender in cricket’s shortest form and things are going very well for them at the moment.

Their explosive hitting with the bat has been the main factor. With scores of 191 and 179 at some stage over the last week or so, they have a massive total in them. Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels have been key to this as has Johnson Charles who smashed 84 from 56 balls against England.

Overall, West Indies have enough in their side to ensure it isn’t all about Gayle. Having said that, if the big man fires, the odds of the Windies progressing are significantly reduce.

It is this fire power that suggests West Indies will come out on top on Friday too. They are a top team in this format and against a hard-working Australia side, they will just about have the edge.

Extra Bet – Dwayne Bravo to be Man of the Match @ 17.00

In terms of who will win the tournament, we are still backing West Indies, currently available at 4.50.
