Premier League Match Tips & Odds for January 12th – 13th 2013

by Thomas

After a dramatic FA Cup weekend, it is time for the Premier League to take centre stage again on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and it is safe to see we are in for some thrilling encounters.

There are big games taking place at the top and bottom of the league, so the best thing to do is have a look at which teams are going up against each other.

Aston Villa v Southampton – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Draw @ 12/5

Christian-Benteke-Jan12This is certainly a massive encounter between two teams that are struggling in the Premier League right now and look to be in a relegation battle this season.

They each hover just above the bottom three and Villa are one point ahead of their opponents, so this is a real six-pointer.

The Villains had been on a shocking run of three defeats, in which they conceded 15 goals, but they put that to bed with a 2-2 draw at Swansea City. In this one though, only a win will do.

As for Southampton, they seem to have improved as the season has gone on and drew 1-1 with Arsenal last time out, which showed they can compete with anyone on their day.

Much like Villa though, the Saints need to claim all three points here after a run of three straight draws.

This should be an enthralling 90 minutes with so much at stake.

Everton v Swansea City – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Draw @ 3/1

Everton’s win at Newcastle United last week ensured that they moved to within just two points of the top four, which David Moyes will be delighted about.

The Scotsman knows a big performance is needed at Goodison Park this weekend though as his men take on a Swansea side full of confidence at the moment.

If they are at their best, then the Toffees should be claiming a victory here, especially if the likes of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini continue their fine form.

Swansea will not just be coming to Merseyside to make up the numbers though and they will fancy their chances of taking something from this one, especially with the pressure off them.

Michael Laudrup’s men sit in eighth place in the league, so can start looking up the table, rather than over their shoulders.

Goodison is sure to be rocking for this one as the home fans know just how important it is and Everton will be looking to make it four wins out of five in the Premier League.

Fulham v Wigan Athletic – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Fulham @ 10/11

Dimitar-Berbatov-Jan12Fulham can come into this encounter with a bit of confidence reinstalled in the squad after their 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion in the top flight last week.

It was a result which moved them six points away from the bottom three, so now they must try and move even further away from trouble.

They take on a Wigan side that are in 18th place right now, but are capable of claiming all three points here.

The Latics can be superb on their day and have the ability to outclass a side for 90 minutes. However, they also have the tendency to go missing in a match, especially away from home.

This is a huge encounter for Roberto Martinez’s team though, so they have to put in a big performance.

If Fulham play at the top of their ability, they should claim back to back victories.

Extra Tip – Fulham to win 2-0 @ 17/2

Norwich City v Newcastle United – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Draw @ 12/5

Two sides that are in a bad run of form in the Premier League also meet on Saturday afternoon as Norwich City, who have lost their last four, take on a Newcastle United side that have had three straight defeats.

The Canaries did have an ten game unbeaten run earlier in the season, so they are still seven points clear of safety and returned to winning ways in the FA Cup, so should be confident of getting back to winning ways in the league this time out.

Newcastle on the other hand, look as though they could be relegation candidates as they are just two points clear of the drop zone.

They also lost Demba Ba to Chelsea last week, so it might be tough to see where the goals and more importantly, the wins are coming from.

It should be a cracking 90 minutes of competitive action in Norfolk.

Reading v West Bromwich Albion – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Reading @ 21/10

Pavel-Pogrebnyak-Jan12These two certainly have very different ambitions for the season as Reading are doing all they can to beat the drop, whereas West Brom are still trying to make a challenge for the top four this year.

The Royals have won just twice all campaign and are seven points away from safety. With this being a home game, Brian McDermott will know that his men have to take a result.

There is still a lot of time left in the season, but if Reading don’t start winning matches, then they are going to leave themselves with too much to do.

West Brom were defeated by Fulham last time out, so a response is what Steve Clarke will be after.

When he has asked things of his men this campaign, they have usually delivered and although a top four finish is unlikely, that is what they have to be aiming for this year.

Stoke City v Chelsea – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Chelsea @ 10/11

Chelsea suffered a shock home defeat to Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League last time out, which was the surprise result of the season.

They now have to put that behind them and claim all three points at Stoke City, which as we know, is far from easy.

The Potters are still unbeaten at the Britannia Stadium this season, a record that Tony Pulis will be proud of. They are sure to put in a big performance here and try and frustrate their opponents with a solid defensive display.

Chelsea’s attackers will have to be at their very best to get through this resilient Stoke side, but if there is one team that are capable – then it is the Blues.

With new signing Demba Ba already netting two in the FA Cup, they have a striker full of confidence and sure to be involved on Saturday afternoon.

This has the makings of a cracking encounter.

Extra Tip – Chelsea to win 3-1 @ 14/1

Sunderland v West Ham United – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Sunderland @ 6/5

Mark-Noble-Jan12Sunderland had looked as though they had moved clear of trouble with two wins on the bounce, but they have followed that up with a couple of defeats and now might be looking over their shoulders again.

The Black Cats entertain West Ham United this weekend and with this being at the Stadium of Light, will be expecting to take all three points.

As we know, West Ham are always a tough side to beat and Sam Allardyce is sure to have them well organised.

The onus will be on Martin O’Neill’s men to come and attack their opponents as the Hammers would be happy to take a point.

Sunderland are another side that have been inconsistent this term and West Ham could take all three points if they are at their best and new signing Joe Cole puts in a good performance.

Extra Tip – Sunderland to win 1/0 @ 6/1

Manchester United v Liverpool – Sunday 1.30PM – Pick: Manchester United @ 8/11

The first instalment of a fantastic Super Sunday comes from Old Trafford as two of England’s fiercest rivals, Manchester United and Liverpool go head to head.

Although the Red Devils have been the superior side over recent years, there is still a great rivalry between these two and it is the one game that fans are desperate to win.

United are of course leading the way in the Premier League this campaign, so this is a massive game for them in terms of the title race.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side are in a great bit of form right now as well, so should be confident coming into this one.

As for Liverpool, a victory here would certainly be a shock but could move them closer to the top four and give them real hopes of Champions League football.

Whichever way you look at it, a scintillating 90 minutes awaits.

Extra Tip – Manchester United to win 2/1 @ 15/2

Arsenal v Manchester City – Sunday 4PM – Pick: Draw @ 12/5

Pablo-Zabaleta-Jan12The second game on Sunday should also be a cracker as champions Manchester City head to North London to take on Arsenal.

The Gunners are trying to close the gap on the top four at the moment, so a result is certainly needed here.

Arsene Wenger knows it will be a tough 90 minutes, but his men did win this fixture 1-0 last season, so they know what it takes to beat the champions of England.

City should come into this one looking to take all three points and play their fast-flowing, attacking football that we have seen over recent weeks.

If Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko can put in similar performances to what they have since Christmas, then you would back the Citizens to take the spoils here.

This has the potential to be one of the games of the weekend, especially if both teams are at their best.

Queens Park Rangers v Tottenham Hotspur – Pick: Tottenham Hotspur @ 5/6

The final game in this round of Premier League fixtures sees Tottenham Hotspur make the journey across London to take on Queens Park Rangers.

The home side are at the bottom of the table right now, but Harry Redknapp will hope their win at Stamford Bridge will finally kick-start the season.

They need to put in a similar performance against a very good Tottenham team here and Rangers are capable of recording another famous victory.

Spurs need the points as well though as they currently sit in third, but could be in fifth position by the time they kick-off on Monday evening.

Both sides like to play good football and Redknapp will be desperate for the points against his former employers.

With plenty at stake and this being a London derby, it should be a fitting way to round of another weekend in the Premier League.

Extra Tip – Tottenham Hotspur to win 3-0 @ 14/1
