La Liga Week 6 Odds & Predictions 2012/13

by Thomas

It has been a superb start to the La Liga season, with Barcelona currently being the early pace-setters – maintaining a 100% record from their opening five matches.

Their main title contenders are likely to be Real Madrid, but after a disappointing start they are eight points off top spot.

There have been plenty of shocks and surprises so far and this weekend is sure to be the same, so lets take a look at the fixtures taking place, which as always are spread out through the weekend from Saturday to Monday.

Valencia v Real Zaragoza – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Draw @ 15/4

Two teams that are currently sitting in the bottom half kick-off the weekend’s action as Valencia host Real Zaragoza.

The home side will be slightly disappointed with their start to the campaign after just one win and two draws so far.

With them playing both ‘El Clasico’ clubs in this time though, it was always going to be tough.

Valencia will see their next few weeks of fixtures as must win if they are to start making a challenge for the top four.

As for Zaragoza, they have managed to win two encounters so far, with their last being an impressive 3-1 win over Osasuna.

They will know what a tough match this is, but have already picked points up on their travels this season – so should be confident of a result.

Malaga v Real Betis – Saturday 5PM – Pick: Malaga @5/6

Both of these sides have started the season extremely well and currently sit in the top six.

Malaga are looking to emulate their success of the last campaign and secure Champions League football yet again.

They do know though that a few more wins and they could be challenging Barcelona at the top of the table.

Betis have surprised a few with their strong start but know they will have their work cut out in this one, especially as their opponents have conceded just one goal on home soil so far in La Liga.

This could be one of the pick of the games this weekend though with superb football sure to be played.

Real Sociedad v Athletic Bilbao – Saturday 7PM – Pick: Athletic Bilbao @ 2/1

Two very inconsistent team go head-to-head on Saturday evening and with the 21 goals conceded between them so far, goals could come thick and fast in this one.

Sociedad have managed to win two games, but have not been able to gather any momentum, following their victorious up with defeats. Home games will be targeted as must win if they are to beat the drop.

Although they must have been a nightmare for supporters, Bilbao have been one of the most exiting teams to watch so far this season.

The Basque Country club did finally manage a clean sheet last time out though with a 0-0 draw at home to Malaga.

Such is the quality in this league that Bilbao could be in a relegation battle if they don’t start winning matches.

A possible nervy, but enthralling 90 minutes awaits.

Seville v Barcelona – Saturday 9PM – Pick: Barcelona @ 1/2

This is the game that all eyes will be on this weekend and it is the final encounter to take place on Saturday evening.

It is first versus fourth and a battle of two unbeaten records in the league at the moment. Seville have already triumphed over Real Madrid this campaign, so will be relishing the opportunity to do the ‘El Clasico’ double on home soil.

However, stopping Tito Vilanova’s men at the moment looks to be a very tough ask as they have won their opening five matches.

Barcelona did leave it late against Granada last time out – but still managed two late goals and took a 2-0 win, even if they were not at their best.

Lionel Messi already has six goals in La Liga and will be the man that everyone is tipping to score again on Saturday evening.

Don’t miss a moment of this one with fast, attacking football sure to be played from start to finish.

Extra tip: Barcelona to win 3-1 @ 10/1

Granada v Celta Vigo – Sunday 11AM – Pick: Granada @ 13/10

Granada have really struggled this campaign, but don’t seem to be too far away from their first victory.

If they are to beat the drop this season then this is the kind of encounter they have to be picking up points from. If not, it could be very tough for them to stay in the league.

Celta Vigo will come here feeling as though they can take all three points though – despite the fact that they have lost both games on their travels so far.

An early goal could silence the crowd and make the atmosphere tense, which will be just what the away team are looking to do.

Another defeat for Granada could see them end the weekend bottom of the table.

Real Valladolid v Rayo Vallecano – Sunday 3PM – Pick: Draw @ 5/2

Another cracking looking fixture here between two teams that started the campaign flying with two wins from their first two matches.

However, neither have won in their last three and this game is sure to be a good indicator as to which side has a good sprit and can bounce back after a run of disappointing results.

The home side will go into as the slight favourites, and know they would go above their opponents with a victory.

Vallecano nearly made a sensational comeback against Atletico Madrid last time out, but could not quite claw back a 4-0 deficit and ended up losing 4-3.

That did show that they do have an ability to fight back though and are sure to be strong in this one.

Whoever comes out on top in this could end up in the top six come the end of the weekend, which they would then see as a great return from the opening six matches.

Osasuna v Levante – Sunday 5PM – Pick: Levante @ 3/1

With just one point on the board so far, Osasuna need to start winning games very soon but their form does not suggest that will be happening in this weekend.

It has being scoring goals that has proven to be the downfall of them so far, as they have netted just three times.

Although, at this stage of the season a win can do a lot for your league position and they could move off bottom spot on Sunday.

Levante have been steady and sit on seven points at the moment. They have not kept a clean sheet so far though, so there is hope for Osasuna finding the net.

If Levante are at their best though, then they will feel as though they should win this one relatively comfortably.

Real Madrid v Deportivo La Coruna – Sunday, 6.50PM – Pick: Real Madrid @ 1/8

Even though it is still early days, you feel as though Real must win this, especially as they could be eleven points behind Barcelona by kick-off time on Sunday evening.

After a 2-0 victory at Rayo Vallecano on Monday night though, Jose Mourinho’s men look as though they may have kick-started their season.

Although they are a long way off Barca at the moment, they certainly have the players capable of catching them.

As for Deportivo, they know that a point here would be a superb achievement and in truth, they are likely to be hoping not to be on the end of a hiding.

With no win in four either, it is tough to see them getting something from this. However, in La Liga this season we know that anything can happen.

Extra Tip: Real Madrid to win 4-0 @ 15/2

Espanyol v Atletico Madrid – Sunday 8.30PM – Pick: Atletico Madrid @ 11/10

Two teams searching for the points for very different reasons play the final game of Sunday evening. Espanyol look to already be in a relegation battle after taking just one point so far.

In contrast, Atletico are looking to break into the top four and have started the season very well – firing on all cylinders.

The away team have been fantastic going forward and much of that is down to Radamel Falcao, who is proving to be one of the best strikers around at the moment.

Espanyol’s matches do not get any easier – which is the way it goes when you are near the bottom. They have scored eight goals so far though, so if they can tighten up at the back they should start winning matches.

Getafe v Mallorca – Monday 8.30PM – Pick: Draw @ 9/4

Rounding off the La Liga action is another encounter between two sides in very different spirits at the moment.

Getafe are hovering just over the drop zone after just one victory this season, whereas Mallorca are in second place and are currently unbeaten.

For that reason, the points are just as precious to either side.

Mallorca have won their home matches and drawn on their travels this campaign, which is a fantastic start. They will be happy with another point here but are sure to be going for all three.

Getafe need to get a victory on home soil – but much like many teams near the bottom, it is going to be a tough ask.

An interesting game to conclude what is sure to be another superb weekend in the Spanish top flight.
