La Liga Previews & Predictions for Feb 9th – 11th 2013

by Scott on February 7, 2013

Another busy weekend of La Liga action takes place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday and with how tight the league is looking at the moment, the points are for grabs are precious.

Barcelona could only draw at Valencia last time out and Atletico Madrid took advantage, closing the gap to nine points.

The league-leaders will be desperate for a win this time out, so let’s see what fixtures are taking place.

Mallorca v Osasuna – Saturday 3PM – Pick: Osasuna @ 5/2

The weekend gets underway with a massive game at the bottom of the La Liga table as Mallorca host Osasuna.

The home team look to be in real trouble right now as they have lost their last four and are now four points adrift of safety.

This is a must win for Mallorca and if they don’t manage that, then the fans might fear that their top flight status is massive danger.

As for Osasuna, this is a chance for them to move clear of the drop zone and after a massive win against Celta Vigo last time out, they should be full of confidence.

This is the second six-pointer in a week for Osasuna and they know just how important these matches are. If you can come out on top – then you will keep your place in La Liga.

Celta Vigo v Valencia – Saturday 5PM – Pick: Valencia @ 13/8

Valencia travel to Celta Vigo on the back of a superb point at home to Barcelona last time out, which showed just how good they can be on their day.

Now though, they have to be victorious this weekend in order to move closer to a Champions League spot and pile the pressure on the teams around them.

If at their best, then Valencia should win this one as they take on a Celta Vigo side that currently occupy a space in the bottom three.

The hosts have now gone four games without taking the spoils, which they will know isn’t good enough. They must raise their performance in this one and look to get a flying start.

With both teams desperate for points, it should be a cracking 90 minutes of action.

Levante v Malaga – Saturday 7PM – Pick: Draw @ 9/4

Malaga currently occupy that all-important fourth spot in the league, but with a number of teams breathing down their necks, they need a result here.

Despite Levante being down in ninth position, they can still move level with their opponents if they win this one, which shows you how tight the fight for fourth is.

Malaga are certainly the team in the better form at the moment as haven’t lost in three, whereas Levante have not taken anything from three of their last four league matches.

The home side will see this as a chance to kick-start their season again though and if they do manage a win, then hopes of a Champions League spot are still alive.

Both of these teams love to play an attacking brand of football, but Malaga do have the best defensive record in the league, so they might be tough to break down.

Deportivo La Coruna v Granada – Pick: Deportivo La Coruna @ 11/10

Deportivo La Coruna are really struggling at the moment and sit rock bottom of the Spanish top flight after losing their last three matches.

This form has seen them fall five points away from safety and if they are to keep their hopes of survival alive, a result is needed here against Granada, who hover just above the relegation zone right now.

Deportivo actually started the season quite well, but they are in freefall now and it is tough to see where the next win is coming from. However, in this league, a team always seems to produce a performance from nowhere and you can never write anyone off.

Granada should come into this one full of confidence though after a win against Real Madrid last time out, which not many were expecting.

The result gave them a bit of breathing space in terms of the fight to stay in the league, but they know it counts for nothing if they don’t get anything here.

Extra Tip – Deportivo to win 1-0 @ 6/1

Real Madrid v Sevilla – Saturday 9PM – Pick: Real Madrid @ 3/10

Real Madrid have to bounce back after their shocking display against Granada last weekend when they host Sevilla this time out.

It had looked as though Jose Mourinho’s side had turned a corner in the league and were ready to go on a superb run, but this performance was similar to the ones he was seeing at the start of the season.

If they are to get second place this campaign, then a run of positive results is needed, starting on Saturday evening. Real have the chance to close the gap on second place to four points, so that is
what they must do.

Sevilla have moved into the top half following back-to-back wins though, so should come to the capital with a fair bit of confidence in the camp.

They can set their sights on a European spot as well, so that makes a result here all the more important.

Extra Tip – Real Madrid to win 3-1 @ 9/1

Barcelona v Getafe – Sunday 11AM – Pick: Barcelona @ 1/11

Barcelona have won just one game out their last three, which is a massive shock when you consider the form they have been in over the last few months.

However, they still sit nine points clear at the top of the table, so a little dip in form really hasn’t cost them too much.

A win is needed at the Nou Camp on Sunday morning though, especially as Getafe are a team in the bottom half right now.

The away side did manage their first win of the year last time out though and would like that to spark a decent run of results, but they know it is going to take something special to get anything from the Nou Camp.

They have to come here and put in a huge defensive performance and then hope they can hit Barca on the counter attack.

When looking at his one though, it is tough to see anything other than a big Barcelona win.

Extra Tip – Barcelona to win 4-0 @ 7/1

Real Zaragoza v Real Sociedad – Sunday 4PM – Pick: Draw @ 23/10

Real Zaragoza have now gone nine games without a win in La Liga and they are in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle if they don’t pick something up this weekend.

They host a Real Sociedad side that have European football in their sites, so it is going to be a very tough afternoon for the home team.

There is no doubt that Zaragoza have the players to get out of trouble, that is clear from their performances in 2012, but they need that first win of the year to come sooner rather than later.

Sociedad come here on a four-game unbeaten run and full of confidence, so they are likely to take the game to their opponents on Sunday.

The visiting outfit have picked up points on the road this campaign and look to be solid at the back right now.

It makes for a very interesting encounter.

Athletic Bilbao v Espanyol – Sunday 6PM – Pick: Athletic Bilbao @ 8/11

Athletic Bilbao’s have finally showed a bit of consistency after going on a three-game unbeaten run in the top flight.

They have won their only home game and drawn two on their travels, which is sure to have delighted the fans.

They will now be looking at the top half of the table as a realistic target for the season and another win here would certainly enhance their chances of doing just that.

Espanyol are just a point behind the Basque Country club though, so certainly have the incentive to come here and grab the points.

They have claimed three wins from their last four matches, which is a fantastic bit of form considering they were in the bottom three a few weeks ago.

With both sides in good form, we should be in for another scintillating match.

Extra Tip – Athletic Bilbao to win 2-1 @ 7/1

Rayo Vallecano v Atletico Madrid – Sunday 8PM – Pick: Draw @ 23/10

Rayo Vallecano lost last week and that saw them move two points adrift of the Champions League spot.

They will be looking to bounce back on Sunday evening at home to Athletico Madrid, but have to put in a massive performance to take all three points.

In truth, Vallecano might be happy with a draw in this one as they are taking on one of the best teams that La Liga has to offer this campaign.

Atletico must keep winning matches in order to put the pressure on Barcelona and if the Catalan club slip-up this weekend, they simply have to take advantage.

The team in second place have been superb this season and keep on picking up wins when people think they might go on a poor run.

The attacking talent on show in this one means that goals are all but guaranteed.

Real Betis v Real Valladolid – Monday 8PM – Pick: Real Betis @ 19/20

The final encounter comes on Monday night and it sees Real Valladolid make the journey to Real Betis.

Betis are of course looking for a top four finish this term and after a defeat to Atletico Madrid last weekend, a response is needed here.

With the table being so tight, Betis could drop down to eighth by the time they kick-off on Monday evening, so the pressure to come out on top might be massive.

Valladolid don’t really look like being in a relegation battle this campaign and they are still a fair way off the European places.

However, a win here could bring them into contention for a spot in the top five, so they should come and attack Betis right from the off.

Extra Tip – Real Betis to win 3-2 @ 20/1
