Florida Gators vs. Virginia Cavaliers Picks, Spread, and Review

VirginiavsGators

Another match-up that should have some fireworks is the Gators vs. Cavaliers 2nd round game. Florida Gators are the #7 seed in the West Region and they’ll be playing the #10 seed Virginia Cavaliers. The Gators opened up as -3.5 point favorites and there hasn’t been any movement on the point spread yet despite most of the action coming in on the Gators

This spread should move before tip-off, so I’d bet on the Gators now if you like Florida. I think the Gators are going to win this game and should be able to cover the small point spread, but they can’t take this game lightly. Florida (23-10) has been losing lately, but two of those losses came against Kentucky including a 74-71 loss in the SEC semi-finals.

Virginia Cavaliers (22-9) lost 67-64 in the ACC conference tournament quarter-finals against NC State, but overall Virginia has a strong team that tries shutting down their opponents rather than try to outscore their opponents. This game pits one of the best offenses in the Gators against one of the best defenses in Virginia.

Florida comes into the game with an RPI Rank of 29 and SOS Rank of 24 while the Cavaliers have an RPI Rank of 53 and a much lower SOS Rank of 83. Virginia has played some tough games against the likes of UNC, FSU and Duke. Earlier in the season the Cavaliers even picked up a 70-58 victory over the #15th ranked Wolverines.

The one complaint I have about the Gators is that the team lives by the 3-ball. Florida scores an average of 76.3 PPG, which is good for 27th overall, but they’re going to have a lot of contested shots when playing the stingy Cavaliers team. Virginia needs to stop the Gators from beyond the arc in order to win this game, but that might not even be enough.

Florida has a lot more play makers on the team including Kenny Boynton (16.3 PPG), Bradley Beal (14.6 PPG), Erik Murphy (10.7 PPG), Erving Walker (12.1 PPG) and Patric Young (10.3 PPG). Virginia may be able to stop and frustrate the Gators early on, but the Cavaliers don’t have the offense to take advantage of their stellar defensive play.

Bet the Florida Gators at -3.5
