Louisville Cardinals vs. Florida Gators Picks

In the West Region the top two teams didn’t fare well at all this year. Michigan State made it to the S16, but lost to Louisville and Missouri lost in the 2nd round against Norfolk State in the biggest upset of the tournament. Florida is a solid team when they’re shooting the ball well and I’m not that surprised to see them in the Elite Eight, but I’m surprised the Cardinals beat MSU.

Louisville controlled the entire game against Michigan State and they played great. Louisville knew the game was going to be a low scoring affair between two great defensive teams and that’s what happened. The 1st half was brutal for fans, as the score was only 23-18 by halftime. The final score was 57-44 for Louisville and as you can see the game was never really that close.

Florida I thought was going to have a tougher time against Marquette, but they won 68-58. Marquette simply didn’t shoot the ball that well in the game while Florida knocked down more baskets. Both teams were poor from 3-point distance and normally that would favour Marquette, but Florida was the team that were hitting more shots from the field.

I was impressed that the Gators were able to overcome their poor 3-point shooting. Many people have been saying that this team relies on the 3-point only, but they proved that to be wrong against the Golden Eagles. The Gators PG Beal lead the team with 21 of the team’s 68 points. Beal is a very quick player that can get open in a hurry and take the ball to the net.

Louisville will have the advantage in the paint in this game, but the Gators should have the edge in perimeter shooting although the Gators did shoot poorly from 3-point distance in the S16 match-up. Dieng is the center on the Cardinals and he had 7 blocks in the MSU game. Dieng should have no problem keeping the Gators out of the paint.

One edge that the Gators should have is quickness. The team is very fast and Louisville may have to get into early foul trouble trying to stop Florida from getting to the hoop, which would be a huge problem for the Cardinals. Russ Smith scored 11 points off the bench for Louisville in their last game against MSU, but usually the bench doesn’t contribute much on offence.
