Michigan State Spartans vs. Saint Louis Billikens Picks

Michigan State didn’t have much of a problem beating LIU-Brooklyn in their 2nd round match-up. The #1 seeded Spartans will be playing the #9 seeded Saint Louis Billikens tomorrow in one of the round of 32 match-ups. Michigan are -6.5 at the spread in this game

The Spartans won 89-67 over the Blackbirds in round 2, but the game was close at halftime. I think Michigan State came out a bit flat to start the game, but once they got going in the 2nd half they quickly put the game out of reach. Draymond Green was the star of the game, as he recorded a triple-double (24 Points, 12 Rebounds & 10 Assists).

Saint Louis was a small underdog against the Memphis Tigers, but it didn’t look like it on the floor. Memphis is a fast and athletic team that loves to run with the ball, but the Billikens made them play a half court game and won 61-54. The Billikens were led by Kwamain Mitchell who scored 22 points and knocked down 4 of 7 shots from behind the arc.

Brian Conklin scored 16 points for the Billikens against Memphis with 10 of those points coming from the charity stripe. Right now the Spartans are -6.5 favourites at most sportsbooks and I think they’ll cover the spread. I thought Memphis had the best chance to beat Michigan State if they could get past Saint Louis, but I don’t think the Billikens will be able to keep it close.

Michigan State was shooting at an alarming rate in their last game, as they nailed 40 of 68 shots from the field. Saint Louis will want to limit the offensive possessions both teams have in this game, but the Spartans are a much more efficient team. The only way I can see the Billikens staying close is if they heat up from the 3-point line.

Saint Louis hit 5 of 13 3-point shots against Memphis, but 4 of those were from Mitchell. LIU-Brooklyn tried staying in the game against the Spartans by hitting 8 of 17 3-point shots. If the Billikens are going to keep this game close I think they’ll need to nail 10 3-pointers and I don’t think they’ll be able to do that.

Draymond Green is going to be able to score at will in the paint and he should be able to clean up the boards. Saint Louis isn’t a big team and they don’t play that strongly on the boards. Michigan State should get lots of garbage points off of misses and it’s going to kill the Billikens. Betting favourites becomes harder in later rounds, but at -6.5 for the points spread, I like Michigan State.
