2012 Week 7 TNF: Seahawks vs. 49ers Predictions

by Scott

Seattle plays San Francisco tonight on Thursday night football in what should be a great game. We have two NFC West teams in this match-up this week and both of teams are 4-2 heading into this game. The winner will take over first place in the NFC West, as the Arizona Cardinals (Currently in 1st) are on a bye week and won’t have a chance to keep pace this weekend.

Seahawks vs. 49ers Week 7 Odds

Point Spread: Seattle Seahawks +7 (-110) vs. San Francisco 49ers -7 (-110)

Moneyline: Seattle Seahawks +265 vs. San Francisco 49ers -325

Game Total: Over 38 (-110) vs. Under 38 (-110)

San Fran is always a great home team and this year they’re off to a 2-1 start at Candlestick. Last weekend the Giants went into SF and completely demolished the 49ers in every aspect of the game. The 49ers have a short week to bounce back from that loss, but I don’t think that’ll be a problem for this disciplined team. Harbaugh will have his team ready to play tonight.

Last year the Niners beat the Seahawks in both match-ups including a 33-17 win at home as a -6 point favourite and a 19-17 win as a -1.5 point favourite. The over/under went 1-1 in the H2H series last year with the over hitting in the game at Candlestick. SF has put up an average of 25 PPG in 3 home games this season and they’ve only allowed 16 PPG.

The Seahawks have averaged 15 PPG on the road, which is lower than their overall average of 18.3 PPG. Seattle has limited their opposition to only 17 PPG on the road and with the offence always a question mark I’d avoid the game total. One bet you could look at is the under 23.5 (-105) on the 49ers team total, as that seems a bit high against this tough Seahawks defence.

Seattle’s team total is over/under 14.5 (-110) and I think that’s likely to go under as well. On the road this year the Seahawks have only been able to score 16, 13 and 16 points against the Cardinals, Rams and Panthers. Scoring against San Fran will be difficult and it wouldn’t surprise me if the 49ers held the Seahawks offence to a FG.

Before allowing the Giants to score 26 last week the 49ers had held the Jets to 0 and the Bills to 3 the two prior weeks. After the way the 49ers were beat last weekend they’ll be extremely motivated to make an example of their division rival. The key to the 49ers covering the spread tonight is Alex Smith. He under performed last week and needs to pick it up quickly.

If Smith turns the football over again tonight it’s going to be a long game for 49ers backers. If Smith can control the game and Gore can pick-up small chunks of yards the Niners defence should seal the deal. Wilson still hasn’t been playing that great and I don’t expect the 49ers to give up a last minute TD to Seattle like the Patriots or Packers defence did this year.
