San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets Picks, Spread & Review 2012

by Sports Options

The Jets were lucky to win last week while the 49ers slept through their road game last week. I think Harbaugh will get his guys into gear this weekend and I expect a full 60-minute performance from the 49ers. This will be low scoring, but I like 49ers by -4.

Point Spread: San Francisco 49ers -4 (-110) vs. New York Jets +4 (-110)

Moneyline: San Francisco 49ers -220 vs. New York Jets +180

Game Total: Over 40.5 (-110) vs. Under 40.5 (-110)

San Francisco came back down to Earth last week following a 24-13 loss at Minnesota as -7 point road favs.  Alex Smith completed 24-of-35 passes for 204 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the 49ers (2-1), who were hoping for their first 3-0 start since 1998.

Vernon Davis had five catches for 53 yards and a score in the setback and Frank Gore rushed for 63 yards with a fumble on 12 carries. After a dominant start to their NFC North tour that included decisive wins over playoff teams Green Bay and Detroit, the 49ers (2-1) were beaten in every facet of the game by the Vikings.

San Francisco was outgained 344-280 and had a 146-89 deficit in rushing, and also turned the ball over three times in the loss. Smith threw his first interception since Week 12 of last season, snapping a 49ers-record streak of 249 consecutive regular-season passes without an interception.

San Francisco has lost five straight games at the Metrodome since beating the Vikings, 20-17, on Dec. 13, 1992. New York is off a 23-20 OT win at Miami last week as -3 point favorites.

Mark Sanchez completed 21-of-45 passes for 306 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while Santonio Holmes finished with nine receptions for 147 yards in the win for the Jets, who were coming off a 27-10 loss at Pittsburgh following a season-opening 48-28 home win over Buffalo.

Shonn Greene had 40 yards on 19 carries for the Jets, while Bilal Powell led New York with 45 yards on the ground. The Jets had a slight 388-381 edge in total offense, but turned the ball over twice and committed nine penalties for 108 yards.

The Jets came into the game last in the NFL in third-down defense and allowed Miami to convert 10-of-19 on third-down. San Francisco is 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS as a favorite between -3½ and -9½ points and 16-5-1 ATS in their last 22 games overall, as well as 12-0 ATS after losing outright as a favorite the previous week.

NY is 9-4 ATS in September games, but only 1-5 SU and ATS as an underdog between +3½ and +9½ points. The Jets have also struggled against NFC West teams, going 8-16 ATS and NY is 0-6 ATS when facing an NFC team as a dog following a SU win the week before.
