2012 French Open Semifinals Predictions

by faststeady

We’re now down to the semi-finals at the 2012 French Open in Paris. On the men’s draw the top 3 seeded players have moved on along with #6 ranked David Ferrer who knocked off #4 ranked Andy Murray in the QF’s. The women’s draw ended up being wide open for the most part as expected and we now have the #2, #4, #6 and #21 ranked women in the semi-finals.

2012 French Open Women’s Semifinals Predictions

  • #6 Samantha Stosur 1.49 vs. #21 Sara Errani 2.92

Stosur hasn’t had that tough of a path to the semi-finals at the 2012 French Open. Stosur beat #27 Nadia Petrova (6-3 / 6-3) in the 3rd round and had an easy match against unranked Sloane Stephens in the 4th round. Stosur played great in the QF’s, as she was able to beat #15 Dominika Cibulkova. Cibulkova knocked out #1 Azarenka in the 4th round and was playing great tennis.

When Stosur is on her game she is very difficult to beat and Errani shouldn’t stand much of a chance. Errani has had a great run at the French Open this year, as she has beat #13 Ana Ivanovic, #26 Svetlana Kuznetsova and #10 Angelique Kerber. Stosur is 5-0 against Errani including a straight set victory on clay this year already.

Stosur vs. Errani Prediction: My pick is Stosur at 1.49 odds although I think betting her to win by -1.5 sets at 2.23 odds may be even better. Stosur has owned Errani in the H2H match-up and Errani is a horrible 1-28 against the T10 in her career.

  • #4 Petra Kvitova 3.2 vs. #2 Maria Sharapova 1.42

Sharapova started off the 2012 French Open great, but she almost lost in the 4th round. Sharapova played unranked Zakopalova and needed 3 sets to win the match. Maria bounced back in the QF’s by beating #23 Kaia Kanepi and I think she’ll be focused in her semi-final match-up against Kvitova. Sharapova holds a 3-2 H2H record against Kvitova, but those matches weren’t on clay.

This year they’ve played against each other twice and Sharapova has won both matches. This year Maria seems to be playing like one of the world’s best players and I think she may win this grand slam. Kvitova has been inconsistent this year and hasn’t been playing well against Sharapova. Maria seems to do very good in 3-set matches in grand slams and I like her to win.

Kvitova vs. Sharapova Prediction: I like Sharapova to win, but the odds are way off in my opinion. In the two matches that these two have played against this year the total # of games has been 27 and 23. Right now the over/under on # of games in this match is 21.5 and I think the best bet is to take the over at 2.00 odds.

2012 French Open Men’s Semifinals Predictions

  • #1 Novak Djokovic 1.57 vs. #3 Roger Federer 2.66

Both of these players may be tired in their semi-final match. Djokovic looked down and out on numerous occasions in the QF’s against Tsonga, but he pulled through. Djokovic faced several match points against Tsonga in the 4th set, but once he won the set Tsonga lost his motivation and folded in the final set of the match.

Federer looked like he was going to lose against Del Potro in the QF’s as well. Del Potro took a 2-0 set lead in the match and it looked just about finished, but Federer pulled through and won the next 3 sets. Both players had to play a hard 5 set match and this match could go either way, but I think the value sides with Federer.

Djokovic vs. Federer Prediction: Last year these two met in the French Open semi-finals and Federer won in 4 sets. In all matches against each other Federer has a 13-11 edge with a 3-2 record on clay courts against Djokovic. This match should be close, but I’m betting on Federer to win at 2.66 odds on Friday.

  • #6 David Ferrer 10.25 vs. Rafael Nadal 1.09

Rafael Nadal almost lost the 1st set against Almagro in the QF’s, but he won the tiebreaker and still hasn’t lost a single set at the 2012 French Open. Nadal is a huge favourite to beat Ferrer and it’s hard to bet against Nadal with the way he’s playing. It would be a huge upset if Ferrer won and I simply can’t see it happening at the French Open on clay.

Both players are great clay court players, but Nadal is the best in the world. Nadal is 16-4 in his career against Ferrer and on clay court Nadal is an incredible 12-1 against Ferrer. The only time Ferrer beat Nadal on clay court was back in 2004. Lately Nadal has owned the H2H match-up. Ferrer typically battles Nadal tough and has held serve reasonably well.

Nadal vs. Ferrer Prediction: Nadal should win this match and there is no value betting on him at the odds. Ferrer has in the past performed well against Nadal and recently he has forced several set tiebreakers. With this in mind it may be worth betting on O31 games at 1.91 odds, but for that to hit Ferrer would need to play a great game on Friday.

2012 French Open Semifinals Best Bets

We’re getting down to the end of the 2012 French Open and it’s becoming harder to find solid bets. The best bets are always at the start of tournaments. On the women’s side my best bet is the O21.5 games in the Sharapova vs. Kvitova match, as both players have played each other really tough this year.

On the men’s draw I like Federer at 2.66 odds against Djokovic although it’s a bit of a longshot. Federer should be confident against Djokovic, as he was able to beat him last year in this same spot. I think the odds should be closer and I’ll side with Federer who has shown that he can beat Djokovic with regularity.
