La Liga dominates Ballon d’Or

by Thomas

The three nominees for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or have been announced and there is no surprise that they all come from La Liga this year. Lionel Messi and Andres Inestia of Barcelona are in contention for the award, along with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi appears to be the favourite with many to win his fourth Ballon D’Or and not many people would argue with that, especially if the Argentinean goes on to break Gerd Muller’s record for goals in a calendar year – something that he looks on course to do.

In 2012, the 25-year-old has been triumphant in the Copa Del Rey and has also been a key part in helping his country top their World Cup qualifying group.

Also this season, his Barcelona side sit top of the Spanish top flight and are safely through to the final 16 of the Champions League.

As for Ronaldo, he helped Real Madrid secure the La Liga title earlier in the year and was a key figure in helping Portugal reach the semi-finals of the European Championships.

Many of years, the former Manchester United man would be the big favourite for the Ballon D’Or, but such is Messi’s brilliance – it would be a bit of a surprise if he did pick it up.

Inestia is of course at Barcelona as well, but he was the only one of these three to claim an international trophy as Spain won the European Championship. His influence in both the Barca and Spain side sometimes goes unnoticed.

In terms of the betting for this award, as mentioned, it is Messi who is the big favourite as he is at 1/4 to win it a record fourth time.

Then Ronaldo is at 13/2 with many of the bookmakers, but given the fact Real beat Barcelona to the title, he could be good value. Iniesta is out at 12/1, but would of course be a worth winner.

All three of these would deserve the trophy as they are three of the finest players to ever play the game.
