2012 March Madness Midwest Region Preview & Predictions

All of the 2nd round games in the Midwest Region are going to be played tomorrow (Friday). We’ve got predictions for each of the 2nd round games plus some information to help you guys out along the way with betting. The Midwest Region is top heavy and one of the top seeds should advance to the Final Four without much of a problem.

2012 March Madness Midwest Region Predictions (2nd Round)

#1 North Carolina Tar Heels -15.5 vs. #16 Vermont Catamounts +15.5

North Carolina (29-5) will have no problem taking care of business against Vermont (24-11) in the 2nd round. UNC actually has a nice path in the tournament and should make it to the Elite Eight. Vermont just beat Lamar handily last night, but they are no match for UNC. I think the Vermont can play some defence and keep this game close though, so take Vermont at +15.5.

#8 Creighton Bluejays +1.5 vs. #9 Alabama Crimson Tide -1.5

The #9 seed typically does pretty good against the #9 seed in the 2nd round of the tourney. Alabama (21-11) is going to be one of the toughest defensive teams the Bluejays have played this season. Creighton (28-5) can score a ton of points, but if Alabama game plans properly they’ll shutdown McDermott, which should disrupt the entire Bluejays offence. I like Bama to cover here.

#5 Temple Owls -3 vs. #12 South Florida Bulls +3

South Florida (21-13) just knocked off Cal in a play-in game last night to earn the #12 seed in the Midwest. Temple (24-7) is a team that most people are overlooking this year I think. At -3 the Temple Owls are my best bet in the Midwest Region in round 2 and I’m going to be betting them pretty big. The Owls have beat Duke this season and should be able to cover against the Bulls.

#4 Michigan Wolverines -5.5 vs. #13 Ohio Bobcats +5.5

Michigan (24-9) has had a great season this year and start the tourney against the Ohio Bobcats (27-7). Ohio had a weak SOS this year and Michigan should be able to walk all over this team if they come out motivated. Michigan is favoured by -5.5 and while I think the Wolverines win the game and advance I don’t feel safe betting them at -5.5, as they’ve flopped against weaker teams.

#6 San Diego State +2.5 vs. #11 North Carolina State Wolfpack -2.5

NC State (22-12) I think is the most popular Cinderella pick this year coming into the tourney. I have NC State advancing to the next round against San Diego State (26-7), but I don’t like them being favoured by -2.5. Everyone is betting on NC State and I’d rather watch this game from the sidelines to see what team advances before betting on either team.

#3 Georgetown Hoyas -4 vs. #14 Belmont Bruins +4

Belmont (27-7) didn’t play that tough of a schedule, but they did play Duke and Memphis to start the year. Belmont is an upset contender in the Midwest Region and I’m taking the Bruins by +4. In big games the Bruins seem to always hang in the game and I think either team could win this game, so I’ll gladly take the +4 points I’m getting on the underdog.

#7 Saint Mary’s Gaels -1.5 vs. #10 Purdue Boilermakers +1.5

This point spread has been bet down this week and I’m not too sure why. I like the St Mary’s Gaels (27-5) this year and I have them going pretty deep in my bracket. At -1.5 this is another favorite that I really like in the Midwest Region tomorrow. A lot of people like Purdue (21-12), but Purdue has lost every big game they’ve played this season except one against Michigan.

#2 Kansas Jayhawks -14 vs. #15 Detroit Titans +14

Kansas (27-6) are probably upset they didn’t get a #1 seed and I think the Jayhawks will be motivated to make a deep run this season to prove their critics wrong. Detroit (22-13) is going to be a very tough match-up for the Jayhawks, but in the end the big men on KU will be able to win this game. I have the Titans +14 though to stay within the point spread tomorrow.

2012 March Madness Midwest Region Top Team

The #1 seed North Carolina Tar Heels are the best team in the Midwest Region. Kansas and Saint Mary’s are the two other teams that I like in this region although I don’t think either team will be able to beat the Tar Heels. Harrison Barnes and Tyler Zeller are going to lead the Tar Heels to a Final Four appearance this year in my opinion.

I think Saint Mary’s will be able to make it to the Elite Eight although they’ll have a tough game against Kansas. Whether Kansas or Saint Mary’s makes it to the Elite Eight I don’t think either team will knock off the Tar Heels. North Carolina drew a nice region to play in and have no excuses for not making it to at least the Elite Eight game this year.

2012 March Madness Midwest Region Cinderella Teams

If you didn’t notice I like the Gaels in the Midwest Region as a #7 seed. I really can’t see any other team making a deep run in the Midwest Region this year. NC State has some nice wins this year and has played some top teams extremely tough. NC State only lost to the Tar Heels by 2 points in the ACC conference tournament last week. Temple could be a bit of a sleeper at a #5 seed, as noone is really giving the Owls any respect this year.

2012 March Madness Midwest Region Best 2nd Round Match-Up

There should be a few good games tomorrow in the 2nd round of the Midwest Region. I think the best game is going to be the Creighton vs. Alabama game in terms of competitiveness. Kansas and Detroit has the potential to be a great game to watch as long as the Jayhawks don’t pull away early in the game. Georgetown and Belmont is another game that you have to watch, as it should be a game that goes right down to the final buzzer.
