Xavier Musketeers vs. Lehigh Mountain Hawks Picks

Xavier Musketeers vs. Lehigh Mountain Hawks Picks

Tomorrow we have a great match-up that should be a very competitive game. If you asked me a couple days ago if I thought the Musketeers and Mountain Hawks would be playing each other in the 3rd round I’d have thought you were crazy.

In the South Region we have the #10 seed Xavier Musketeers playing the #15 seed Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Xavier and Lehigh both cashed in the 2nd round as underdogs and in this game the Musketeers are -3.5 point favourites. The point spread opened up at -2.5 and has been bet out to -3.5 points.

Xavier won a close game (67-63) over the Fighting Irish after trailing by 2 at the break. Tu Holloway led Xavier with 25 points and Dezmine Wells cleaned up the boards with 11 rebounds on the night. The Musketeers shot exactly 50% from the floor and nailed 50% of their 3-point shots (5-10).

Lehigh shocked a lot of people by beating the Blue Devils in the 2nd round. Lehigh were +11 point underdogs, but none of the pts were needed in this game, as the Mountain Hawks won 75-70. C.J. McCollum scored 30 points for Lehigh and he is one of the top guards in college basketball. Gabe Knutson pitched in with 17 points while Mackey McKnight scored 11 points.

When you look at this game we’re simply going to have a battle of the guards. McCollum and Holloway are going to be the two stars in this game that need to shine. If both players contribute roughly the same I think Xavier may have a small edge. Xavier gets production from two big men down low and Lehigh won’t be able to win the battle of the paint.

In order for Lehigh to win another game in the tourney McCollum needs to drop another 30 points or McKnight needs to pitch in a bit more to make up for McCollum’s production on offence. With a -3.5 point spread I like the underdog. Lehigh just beat Duke and will be confident that they can beat Xavier.

I’m betting on Lehigh at +3.5 and putting a bit on the moneyline. This game is going to be close and it may come down to the very last shot to determine what one of these Cinderella teams can punch their ticket to the Sweet Sixteen next week.
